First strike at Le Monde

To protest against severe jobs-cuts at the flagship paper, Le Monde will be on strike today for the first time in its 64 years history. The cost savings plan presented last week (see Monday Note #30 ) includes the elimination of 130 positions, about 70 in the newsroom alone. Le Monde is plagued by chronic deficit (7 years), and internal politics got in the way of the strong medecine required to save the patient - so far.
