Here in France, IP TV is a reality for years and consumers are offered with many ADSL operators (neuf, Free, Orange, Bouygues...). On the technical side, their solutions run within a 'TV box' connected to the TV on one side and to the home network on the other side (I say 'home network' because the ADSL modem is a hub with 5 ethernet plug and a wifi antanea). This is exactly the configuration Jean-Louis was describing in his article. But, to unveil the Jean-Louis fears, the ADSL operator can manage the TVbox remotetly to update the system, or install softs or reset the device. The consumers can do whatever they want with the TV shows they are watching : stop, rewind, save and even... share it because the TV box holds a hard disc and it's connected to the consumer private area available on the provider's web site. And, to finish the field of possibility, the IPTV technology implies that my TV provider tracks all my TV usage. There are hundred of thousands IPTV subscribers here in France. And you know what: nothing ! no Google, no targeted ads, no ticker or special offers... The TV shows 'as usual' !
