		<description>Jean-Louis,

To understand why the Verizon deal is important to google, we should consider why google created Android to begin with. Perhaps the issue at the heart of it is one of lack of any other clear options for Google.

Consider that search on a smartphone generates some 20% or less of ad revenue than on its desktop counterpart, and that people will be spending more time on these devices going forward at the expense of time on desktop machines. How would you stop an increasingly larger slice of your readership dropping in revenue by 80%?

Well, I can&#039;t think of a solid answer to that and I trust that no one does. The only choice is to get in a position where you have more control over how things develop going forward, buying time while a winning formula emerges, and hopefully be the one to find that winning formula. So, today, the strategy for Google is to be *important*, with importance being measured as footprint and not revenue or content or business models. Thus the worrisome smile in Eric&#039;s photo! :)

Sincerely,
