AT&T is fine with me and my iPhone. AT&T has great customer service and its connections are good where I live.

AT&T is probably carrying more than 30x the 3G data traffic compared to Verizon due to the iPhone's great web browsing capacity.

We'll have to wait a few years (2012) to see how Verizon handles REAL data traffic.

In general, I've found AT&T's network to generally be reasonable. I've had a few (surprising) dropped calls on urban interstates, but, so has my better half on Verizon. 3G networks are not wifi, nor are they wired ethernet. Could they improve? Sure.

Perhaps the worst AT&T experience I've seen is at large airports during "rush hours". It's easy to observe terrible data performance and, periodically, the 3G net dies.

It will be interesting to see how Verizon holds up when the iPhone and its successors, eventually arrives on their plantation.

There is one critical aspect of the user experience Apple does not control, namely AT&T's abysmal network, which can't even manage voice properly these days, let alone data. A phone's superior UI is for naught if the network is not up to scratch.
