Interesting and useful musings but you miss the point. The entire Internet is going to be overhauled with the advent of everything being touch.
http://ebooktest.wordpress.com/2009/10/13/touch-will-change-everything/
If you don't believe that, consider how many sites did special ones just for the iPhone -- and how many went straight to *apps* to convey a better than web browser experience (not all successfully). Every day that I sit before a screen parallel to my face and use a mouse to select things makes it seem like I should be hearing the clop-clop-clopping of horse's hooves outside my window. It's that backward.

First of all, I love Mr. Felloux's ongoing examinations of the underlying issues in the online news business. As a regular (though silent) reader, let me speak up this once to say "Bravo!" for many, many thought-provoking pieces, including this one.

But....

The value chart consigning archives and old stuff to the lowest tier of CPMs is incorrect, in my experience. In 20+ years online, I've never even heard of an advertiser discriminating between old stories and new ones. How would they know, even if they had the urge?

Furthermore, the aggregate page views on "old stuff" makes up the majority of page views on many content-rich sites. I'd have guessed that this is true even on the newsiest of pure-news sites, but your diagram assigned 80% of page views to "recent items." That just doesn't gibe with my experience.

Lastly, it's is absolutely true that the home page of the site has the best monetization. But in Google's world, users overwhelmingly arrive on stories or topic pages. The homepage accounts for 5-10% of page views. That makes it a sweet spot, but just a spot. (Unless you are Yahoo, then you have an amazingly valuable homepage.)

Thank you for higly interesting observations. I'm still wondering about a few things:

Is not Aftonbladet.se, ie the website with the longest scroll, also (one of) the most successful of those mentioned above if measured by usagage within its demography and perhaps also financially? (It does of course differ from many of the others by commanding top position in its country.) Its design is ugly and the page is endless.

The NYT prototype has no front page ads. Is that the concept, or a function of it being beta?

Your thoughts on ads within the media and the Skyrock innovation in advertising innovation, are refreshing.
