Giving money to apple by taxing google, doesn’t looks very fair. And it’s already an obsolete idea just to protect old pop music producers. The youngers will find their own way to be paid for their music productions. Using the free systems, like netlabels and creative commons to broadcast their music, to be known first.

Zelnik and Toubon are really not what I would call “French cultural elite”. Yes, Toubon has been Ministre de la Culture, but the title does not give competences;

This is just one ludicrous idea, totally impossible to implement with regards to french tax system and international treaties. You must not forgot that the “to be taxed” Google is actually and Irish company, as AdSense revenues for Europe are now paid from Dublin.

And in case the government would decide to issue such a law, it would be stopped after several years of costly legal procedures.

Much ado about nothing,

Nevertheless, there is a general trend of growing concern regarding Google in Europe. Apart from the nice ideas of my president, German government expressed worries regarding privacy, and threatened to issue laws if Google is not transparent enough.

You forgot to mention how indecent it is that the commission was headed by his wife’s record producer and she has a direct financial stake in the outcome. Give a blue-ribbon post to a music industry executive and, big surprise, his recommendation is to tax a solvent company to bail out his own artistically, morally and financially bankrupt sector…

If you have to drag berets and baguettes into the argument, it shows you’re really short of ideas on this one!

As for your assertion that France “is lagging behind the rest of the industrial world in terms of technological innovation”, well I guess I’ll just have to hop across the Channel to see how marvelous things are in the free-market paradise that is my original homeland.

How to get there? Take the French high-speed train!
