So here we are, not quite a year after this was posted about the Nexus One, and rumors are rampant about the Nexus Two being announced in about a week. Allowing for directionally correct rumor milling, has anything changed? Is, in fact, Google still worried about the Android Tower of Babel? Is this Google's second try to provide a "reference" platform, as noted in the excerpt below and if so what do they hope to gain out of doing so if it doesn't matter (I.e., if carrier dictators like Verizon want to continue to have their cake and eat it too)?

Google needs its own network not a phone. At the end of the day, the Telco has the final control on what you can and can't run on the phone.

Excellent observations. It has seemed to me for the past couple of weeks or so of "Google Phone" talk that there was no focus to itʻs place in the market. It appears that Google wants this thing to be everything to everyone, but so far isnʻt even close. They have a long way to go to become the "iPhone Killer" they dream to be!

Your post captures a lot of insightful points about the Nexus One, and Google's intentions. Having been responsible for the team at TMo that launched the first device, the G1, and watching the course Google has taken since that time, I am comfortable that Google will continue to modify their oligarchical open model to serve their agenda first, and the open community second. In order to ensure core Google services continue to be unabated and unfragmented by the "linuxification" of the OS (I prefer to say the Symbianifcation), they will incent OEMs and carriers to comply with a malleable set "rules" they create to keep on course.

Did you know, for instance, that Apple has a 70% share of contract sales in France? Seventy percent market share?! How do you break that? from http://ultimibarbarorum.com/2010/01/12/all-about-android/

Isn't this also about being able to learn speech recognition? IMHO Google is preparing itself for monetizing Web videos (e.g. Youtube) and upcoming ad-based IPTV formats as well as voice-based Internet navigation. It's an open secret that this was the idea behind Google Voice.
I could also imagine that Google simply wants to get more web-centric Android devices out on the street. The more devices are out there, the more traffic Google (esp. search) gets.
So, if they could make money on the sold devices (without having to bother about distribution or after-sales) PLUS drive traffic to their sites PLUS get people hooked on Google's cloud services PLUS learn speech recognition better than anyone else...?? Sounds like a good idea to me...!

It didn't take long before consumers flooded Google with complaints of lack of support. The BBC reports today, here:

A project is strategic for Google if it affects what sits between the person clicking on an ad and the company paying for the ad.

What’s strategic for Google? http://cdixon.org/2009/12/30/whats-strategic-for-google/

Nexus One (setting a standard) is a tactic necessary to their mobile ad strategy?
