16:9 screens are actually cheaper to make (which is why all the LCD screen manufacturers are heading that way. But the 4:3 dimensions make sense for managing and displaying photos, as well for reading newspaper and magazine content. it also makes sense to maintain the same aspect ratio of the iPhone, given the compatibility with those applications. Sure, most video is now 16:9, but for just about every other iPad application 4:3 makes a good deal of sense.

The iPad costs about $287 to make, according to tear-down websites. The 8 Gb iPod Touch costs about $160 to make, and it sells for $199. In fact, I'm now reading articles that demand that Apple reduce the price before it's even available for sale.

So, there's plenty of profit in the current price of the iPad, especially the high-end models (that people will prefer).

But will people buy it? People who like Apple scarf up their stuff; I'll bet that plenty of people with an iPhone and an iMac will buy one for casual surfing and work.

The real question is whether or not the masses will like it - and I'm betting (given the mass acceptance of the iPhone and iPod Touch) that they will. The masses who buy the iPhone/iPod buy it for its incredible usability, not because they're Apple fanboys/girls. Apple makes their devices simple to use, so the device doesn't get in between the user and the content (music, web pages, movies, games). The iPhone disappears when you use it; you're just immersed in the content. The iTunes store works flawlessly; compare it to any other mobile device online store, and you'll see what I mean.

IPad just does it bigger.

Jean-Louis, Another point to consider is that iPad will have a much longer "repurchase" cycle than a phone and probably even a laptop. While people are ok to fork out a few hundred dollars every 2-3 years for the latest "phone", I suspect that such will not be the case for a kitchen/couch device. This drives a change in the business model in a few different dimensions which deserve some thoughts:

1- Does it really need 3G? There needs to be some stronger incentives here or the recurring revenues will be from a small fraction of units.

2- Will it look "old" and feel clunky in 3 years? To the average consumer that would mean the last iPad purchase from Apple.

3- There's a bet on movies and video content here. Is it really that much better to watch star trek on the iPad than on your 50" flat panel? Is there a pull for Apple TV here or does the iPad replace it? Cuz I'm not paying for the content twice.

4- The educational use of iPad was under-advertised. There's got to be a large push in the works cuz the hand fits the glove very well in this segment. Custom made course material along with video lectures and cross referenced content ... No one will be showing up to those 8:00 AM lectures anymore!

I'm personally convinced that my son will break the first iPad we'll buy when he yanks it off the coffee table and onto the floor, but that won't stop me from buying one. I'm a dog ...

>>> Further, let’s look at numbers: in your mind’s eye, do you picture lines going five times around the Apple stores the day of the iPad’s release?

Yes, I do. Unless the economy takes another big dump.

You forget the iPhone was *six hundred dollars* at launch. (Yeah, there was the 4GB model which quickly disappeared.)
