I don't think you can conflate the cost structure of the book publishing business to journalism.

In journalism, distribution is not where the problem is. The problem is with content creation model where, at scale, there is currently no way to running cheaply/cost effectively even to produce non-unique content. Books, in comparison, are much more unique in terms of content, thus carrying a better potential in terms of price/lack of alternatives.

By 2012 tablets won't become a commodity, at least not at the current price point. Even going by the 4.3 million iPad figure by end of 2010 and doing a 10% conversion on the user base shelling out let us say $20 per user per month average on app subscriptions, the number is far from massive or exciting.

I think eBooks as we know them are boring. There's nothing really new to them. They're just 1:1 replicas of the printed version in digital mode. With them we're still stuck in linear reading, trying to make sense by going from word to word, adding up phrase after phrase. We may go back from time to time trying to keep track of what's going on but it's still happening in the linear mode which is a rather slow approach to what our minds nowadays can do, and actually, it seems to me, are used to do, usually called thinking. Those who can claim to be thinking do operate in the flash mode which is done by a lot of zapping & channel hopping through multi-layered 4D-representations of what some may still call facts, reality or whatever. And what we come up with on our trip is constantly being arranged and rearranged according to incoming data, checking for patterns that have emerged elsewhere and which may or may not fit into some larger picture. To me linear reading and the processing of information according to linear standards are completely inadequate to the ways our minds operate nowadays. We have yet to come up with products and concepts that may do justice to our new ways of working our minds. That, after all, is what the media's business of dealing in information is about > thinking, not just consuming.

Hi,

I agree with you that "The concept of book publishing needs an upgrade."

That's why I recently co-founded Fifobooks, a new ebook marketplace here in New York.

We want to do for e-books and their authors what the iPhone AppStore did for mobile apps and independent developers.

Fifobooks.com is an ebook marketplace where an author:
- retain all the rights to their work
- maintain full editorial control
- set the price at which their ebooks are sold, and keep the majority of the revenue
- there is no fee to publish
