Interesting post. Content matters for me, even there's no ads to make everything more interesting. But that's right maybe someday if nobodies pay maybe there's no content to read anymore so we still need something that work in balance. There's many ways to make content keep produced even without ads or few ads.

You're missing something: Nobody Needs News.

It's not water or electricity; everyone can easily do without it. And there is far more good, even great, content than there are brains to pay attention to it.

Content was already worthless. It just took RSS readers to make it obvious.

While plenty of people are busy working on products that transform online content into magazine-style offerings, most of the action is currently taking place around the iPad. PressJack is a US startup working on an interesting way of recreating the experience within a browser. The company offers a piece of desktop software, available for Windows and Mac, that allows you to transform multiple RSS feeds into a single magazine that you can upload to the Web and view full screen.

Have you noticed that Google Analytics also ignores linked pages read in most RSS readers (assumed to be bots) so real GA pageview stats are wrong? Makes a mockery of trying to get advertisers to pay rates based upon GA stats.

Great tour d'horizon. The challenge with most of these apps is the so-called personalization is shallow at best. Following & reading what your friends are streaming is not personalization.

I invite you to look at www.Eqentia.com (I'm the founder), a platform solution for personalizing, aggregating, curating, semantic tagging, re-publishing & social media integration, all-in-one. We link to the original articles, so we don't destroy the ads.

Super Frederic! And WHO SAID RSS IS DEAD? :-) thanks Frederic!

How about news publishers sell RSS subscriptions? You pay a monthly fee to get the xo tent you want from a certain source via RSS feed, paid-for, and you read that content in the app YOU prefer. sports from X, Column from Y, book reviews from Z, ... all different feeds...

Two comments:
Re: Read, Share, Destroy

1. You get what you pay for, and the corollary, you have to pay for what you get. Ultimately, if content creators don't get paid well, they'll stop producing content, and we'll be left with all schlock and friends' views on schlock. So a solution has to emerge that induces readers to pay something. (No, not like the nyt.com paywall.)

2. It can't be all ads. I have trained myself to not see ads. I may notice the more intrusive ones like I notice a buzzing mosquito, but I'm not saying, "Wow! I want to buy that!" Maybe this is not true for the young demographic the ads target.

Re: Read, Share, Destroy

1. You get what you pay for, and the corollary, you have to pay for what you get. Ultimately, if content creators don’t get paid well, they’ll stop producing content, and we’ll be left with all schlock and friends’ views on schlock. So a solution has to emerge that induces readers to pay something. (No, not like the nyt.com paywall.)

2. It can’t be all ads. I have trained myself to not see ads. I may notice the more intrusive ones like I notice a buzzing mosquito, but I’m not saying, “Wow! I want to buy that!” Maybe this is not true for the young demographic the ads target.
